TRADE INDUSTRY AND LOCAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Trade Industry and Local Economic Development is now a department on its own and in Kikuube it is just a year old since it became a fully-fledged unit.

  

This department implements 6 major outputs as listed below;

  • Trade Development and promotion services
  • Enterprise development services
  • Market linkage services
  • Cooperative mobilization and outreach services.
  • Tourism promotion services.
  • Industrial development services

 

Sectoral Mandate

The overall mandate of the sector

 

The overall sectoral mandate is to develop and promote a competitive and export led private sector through accelerating industrial development for economic growth.

 

The strategic objective is to formulate, review and support policies and programs aimed at promoting and ensuring expansion and diversification of trade, cooperatives and environmentally sustainable industrialization.

 

In order to achieve the above, the department works closely with other stakeholders such as the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperative (MTIC), Ministry of Agriculture Animal Industry and Fisheries(MAAIF), Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS), Uganda Development Corporation (UDC), Uganda Development Bank (UDB), Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) etc.

 

The department also works in collaboration with the Private sector, to promote increased investments and service delivery in the district. These include World Vision Uganda, Swiss contact, Uganda Kolping Society (UKS), SNV, Bunyoro-Kitara Diocese, Hoima Caritas Development Organisation (HOCADEO), World Food Programme (WFP), Lutheran World Federation LWF), Action Against hunger, UNHCR, American Refugee Council (ARC).

 

There are also government programmes which the department also promotes and these include DRDIP and ACDP which are geared to increased productivity and marketable volumes for sale so as to improve on peoples incomes for better livelihoods.

Activities usually carried out by the Sector

  1. Conducting trade sensitization meetings on trade policies.
  2. Monitoring of businesses for compliance
  3. Identifying and assisting business enterprises in registration.
  4. Mobilising individuals and farmer groups to embrace commercial farming and bulk marketing.
  5. Training of farmer organization in cooperative production and management.
  6. Mobilising farmers for registration.
  7. Conducting market research for farmers produce.
  8. Profiling registered businesses
  9. Monitoring and supervision of cooperatives.
  10. Holding planning meetings with farmer groups, associations and cooperatives.
  11. Identifying and supporting model farmers
  12. Updating register of all hospitality facilities and tourist attraction sites.
  13. Conducting meetings of stakeholders in the tourism industry.
  14. Carrying out field visits to monitor farmer groups.
  15. Conducting trainings in various fields while focusing mainly on roles and responsibilities of leaders, financial management and record keeping.

 

As one way of accessing performance, we do monitor and supervise farmer groups, Associations and cooperatives.
